Seventeen-year-old Raine Cooper has enough on her plate dealing with her father’s disappearance, her mother’s erratic behavior and the possibility of her boyfriend relocating. The last thing she needs is Torin St. James—a mysterious new neighbor with a wicked smile and uncanny way of reading her.
Raine is drawn to Torin’s dark sexiness against her better judgment, until he saves her life with weird marks and she realizes he is different. But by healing her, Torin changes something inside Raine. Now she can’t stop thinking about him. Half the time, she’s not sure whether to fall into his arms or run.
Scared, she sets out to find out what Torin is. But the closer she gets to the truth the more she uncovers something sinister about Torin. What Torin is goes back to an ancient mythology and Raine is somehow part of it. Not only are she and her friends in danger, she must choose a side, but the wrong choice will cost Raine her life.

I loved the whole mythological aspect involving the "runes" and thought the paranormal, or "magical", aspect was brilliance. I loved the glowing, the healing, the general magical awesomeness. And the "Mists". But in order to get to that, you have to first get past The main character, Raine, and her wishy- washy feelings. But I went into the book knowing there would be multiple interests, so I cannot complain too heartily. (:
I always have to talk about the villians. The villian(s) in this book meant some business. I mean, meow, don't care who is in your way as long as you get what you want. Loved it.
Cora was hilarious and I loved how she is a caring supporting character, but has her own vibrant personalty that endears her to you. She was a hoot, and so naughty, always winking and making saucy comments. haha. She might be my favorite character.
I loved how Raine is a reader, a nerd, and co- captain of the swim team. She is a really cute character and I totally love that she hates dresses, because that is so me.
Eirik was a gem. I mean, he is sweet and funny, with his own mysterious family and a passion for photography and for Raine<3 . A Very endearing character.
Toran was mysterious and almost never had his shirt on. [much to the dismay and delight of Raine.... and the delight of me..] ;) But he had a nice snarky- albiet somewhat arrogant- personality. And he has the most gorgeous blue eyes. hehe. Yes, please. A Very lust-worthy character.
The book was excellently descriptive, both with the characters and the world-building. The ending, though..it..... tore.. me.... up. But it was engaging all the way through and I am looking forward to Immortals. (: Because, seriously... I mean.. come on... immortals? hehe.
Great review Ryan this sounds like a really fun book! I always love side characters like Cora who really put extra energy into the whole thing!
ReplyDeleteI know, right? Some books just would not be the same without some supporting characters. (:
DeleteHappy you enjoyed Runes, and don't blame me for the ending. I'm just the poor helpless writer. Blame the Norns. They are the ones messing with people's memories.
ReplyDeleteHaha. suuuuuuuure. ;)
