The Espressologist by Kristina Springer

What’s your drink of choice? Is it a small pumpkin spice latte? Then you’re lots of fun and a bit sassy. Or a medium americano? You prefer simplicity in life. Or perhaps it’s a small decaf soy sugar-free hazelnut caffe latte? Some might call you a yuppie. Seventeen-year-old barista Jane Turner has this theory that you can tell a lot about a person by their regular coffee drink. She scribbles it all down in a notebook and calls it Espressology. So it’s not a totally crazy idea when Jane starts hooking up some of her friends based on their coffee orders. Like her best friend, Em, a medium hot chocolate, and Cam, a toffee nut latte. But when her boss, Derek, gets wind of Jane’s Espressology, he makes it an in-store holiday promotion, promising customers their perfect matches for the price of their favorite coffee. Things are going better than Derek could ever have hoped, so why is Jane so freaked out? Does it have anything to do with Em dating Cam? She’s the one who set them up! She should be happy for them, right? With overtones of Jane Austen’s Emma and brimming with humor and heart, this sweet, frothy debut will be savored by readers.

My Thoughts
wow. this felt surprisingly short. hmn. I have been waiting to get a hold of this book for a while (just ask tiffany/kevin).Finally read i t today. here it is, people:

I think it is really cute how the character matches the people up based on their coffee preferences. Well, it's not like she says: eh, those two flavors seem okay together. match em up! no, she has been writing down peoples personalities as she observes them for months. I am not, nor have i ever been, someone who can drink coffee, so all the jargon threw me off a bit. The story is mostly set in the Coffee shop where Jane and her best friend EM work. Jane is a little bit of a slacker when it comes to school and college. she is a senior, but attends some community college classes. the story mostly centers on how she matches the people up and what personalities go with others. she becomes famous and most of the book is people asking her to hook them up. there was only a little romance on her part, for this to be a book dripping with it. (i do not believe that last sentence made sense, but i am moving on) we meet a love interest, and supposedly he is really into her. however, there isn't really a building up to love in this book. how to explain..hmn. The characters: Jane, Will, Cam, and Em are not really full characters. Or rather, i felt like they weren't fully developed. I wanted to learn more about them, but i was stuck with what Jane was thinking. She did not know a lot about Will or Cam, therefore, i did not know much about them. i felt like it was a good story (even if people's coffee preferences aren't really based on their personality types. they are based on what tastes good. but darn it, the author made me believe it and had a good premise so it worked)all in all, it was an enjoyable, but quick read. I just wanted to get to know the characters better, but that is just me. If the author has more books, i think i will check them out. i mean. the book was pretty cute. :)

  2. Hmm, sounds interesting. Reminds me of the classic Emma (Jane Austen) + coffee! I am a coffee drinker, and it seems to be a bit of a cult thing in places.. so I can totally see the lure.

  3. haha. i love the smell of coffee. not so much the taste, though. I have never been to a starbucks so i wouldn't know the goings on inside. i mean of course i know what a Starbucks is and what goes on. lol. But you will probably be able to connect with it more than i did. :)
