The Time Traveler's Boyfriend
Goodreads | Amazon | Read Chapter One
Claudia’s geeky boyfriend Adam has just invented a time machine.
No, really—he has. She doesn't believe it either until Adam provides her with definitive proof that he does, in fact, have a functioning time travel device sitting in the living room of his Manhattan brownstone.
But instead of getting ready to accept the Nobel Prize, Adam has very different plans for his groundbreaking invention. He wants Claudia to use the machine to travel back in time and stop the accident that landed him in a wheelchair over a decade ago, and prevent the trajectory of events that he believes ruined his life.
When Claudia reluctantly agrees to become the first human time traveler, she knows she’s making a big gamble. If she succeeds, she could have the happy ending with commitment-phobic Adam that she’s always dreamed of. But if she fails, it could mean the end of the universe as she knows it.
Review
I enjoyed this book so much! The book is told entirely from Claudia's point of view. She is a thirty eight year old woman who has found the love of her life. Adam is a geeky, but sweet and sexy man who is the same age as her. All she wants to do is marry him and move in with him, but he seems to have residual commitment issues. He tells her that ever since he landed in the wheelchair, his life has been miserable- she is the only good thing in her life. When he builds a time machine and asks Claudia to go back in time and prevent him from having the accident, she realizes she will do anything for him to make him happy- even if it means she will lose him, she will help him. Although things do not always go as well as planned.
You guys, I loved this story. I normally do not like reading a story about a character almost 18 years older than me, but I absolutely could not help but love Claudia and Adam. I fell a little bit in love with 39 year old Adam when she recounted her time with him and 22 year old Adam when she met him while traveling back in time. I just.. I loved the characters.
The story was so well- told. I loved the paradoxes mixing the past and present and the way the author tied everything together. The romance in the book was sweet and sexy, but also real. It was splendid.
I like how the book is not solely about the romance. Claudia meets a younger Adam and cannot help but notice the slight changes between him and her Adam. Claudia also gets to meet her younger self and I was fascinated that the author explored the changes we experience throughout different ages. Claudia is nothing like she was back then. In fact, she is disgusted by her younger self. It was a very interesting concept, having her look back on herself and see what she was, and be able to find pride for what she has accomplished since then.
Some points were a bit predictable, but I was not too upset. I was actually excited to know what would happen and if I was right. I was just so eager to see Claudia and Adam when it was all said and done. I wanted to know how it would end and what would change.
All I can say about that is that I loved the ending. It was sweet and heartwarming. I closed this book with a satisfied feeling that I had read a book I greatly enjoyed, but with a hint of sadness that the story was over. I will definitely be reading more books by this author. I can only pray her future characters are as endearing and her story-lines are as though- provoking as this one was. So. Good!
