In Her Dreams by Katherine Givens [Spotlight + Excerpt]

In Her Dreams

A flirty, fun, mix-and-match romance about two sisters who are betrothed to the wrong men…
Evangeline Vernon is a woman on the verge of spinsterhood — until the prim and proper Duke of Manchester steps in. Her family is pleased with the match, but the duke is not the passionate man Evangeline craves. Her heart belongs to an alluring, golden-haired gentleman, perfect in every way…except one: he doesn’t exist.
Angela Vernon is everything a proper, well-brought-up woman should be. She knows her place and understands society’s expectations — which include not being jealous of her sister and not coveting her sister’s suitor. But how can she bear the heartache of watching the only man she loves marry not only her sister, but a woman who doesn’t see past his exterior to the man he is beneath?

Excerpt

She was lost in the depths of his emerald eyes, amber drops floating in the seductive pools. The man reclined in a wingback chair, surrounded by shelved books. His head was tilted slightly downwards, his gaze piercing her where she stood. Hair the colour of antique gold shimmered in the dim candlelight. His skin was bronzed like the helmet of an Ancient Greek warrior.  His harsh features seemed to be chiselled from stone, but laugh lines encircled a passionate mouth. A navy blue coat and white waistcoat hid what could only be a perfectly sculpted chest. A white cravat covered his neck. Pearl grey breeches accentuated muscular legs.

The man reminded her of a golden lion, the king of a pride. His soul must’ve been older than time itself, for he seemed to hold the secrets of the universe in his mind. This man was temptation embodied.

‘Back again, my dear?’ he inquired, his voice like velvet.

Although confidence rang in his tone, his emerald eyes revealed the humanity of this divine creature. At the bottom of those depths lay an expanse of loneliness. Blessed with beauty, he was lacking in companionship and love. It was as if he were a traveller lost in a desert with only mirages to keep him company.

‘I could not stay away,’ she declared, her voice quaking as the man rose from his chair and stalked across the room.

Evangeline took a sharp intake of breath, for the full sight of his robust body was more than a woman could take. He was tall, over six feet. His build was as formidable as the strongest castle wall, built to protect from the worst of sieges. That handsome face of his, a face Adonis would’ve fought for, matched the masculine beauty of his body.

Settling beside her, he said, ‘Nor could I. Not now. Not ever.’

The two studied one another. Both seemed to find it hard to believe the other was there. The silence that shrouded the room as they studied one another deepened the strength of this ethereal spell.

‘Is it because I am a diversion?’

‘Nay.’ He raised her hand to his lips. ‘Life would be meaningless without your visits.’

‘I could not endure my own existence without you,’ she replied, a bit breathless.

‘As a man without friends or comrades, I would be the most lonesome wretch wandering the earth.’ Pain entered his expression, the pain of one who had suffered years of isolation. His voice cracking, he continued, ‘I would be completely alone.’

Her heart nearly split in two upon witnessing his agony. She lifted a hand and caressed his cheek. ‘You never shall be.’

‘You have been vital to my life, my dreams, for these past few months.’ Turning his head, he kissed the palm of her hand. He exhaled, his breath tickling her skin. ‘Without you I I fear I would not know how to live.’
‘Do not say such things.’ Framing his face, she forced him to gaze into her eyes. ‘I shall always be with you.’

‘And I with you.’ Desperation was threaded throughout the statement. ‘I am entirely yours,’ he murmured as he angled his head, preparing to taste the sweetness of her lips…

The unexpected happens in an instant. On her way to work, secretary Docia Waverley hurtles into a crashing crossroads, and she quickly begins to suspect that things will never be the same. Then, when a tall, blond, muscular stranger intervenes on her behalf, telling her it is his duty to protect her at all cost, what is just a feeling turns to proof positive. That is, as long as Docia’s savior doesn’t turn out to be a crazed kidnapper.

When Ram finds Docia, he has no doubt that she is his queen. But as this golden warrior sweeps in to protect her, he feels something more than body heat every time they touch. He is overwhelmed by a searing connection that goes deep into the twin souls inside him. A desire rises in him that is forbidden—this woman is his queen, the mate of his king, his leader, his best friend. And yet Docia is so vulnerable and attractive that she awakens a hunger in Ram that is undeniable, a carnal craving he cannot yield to . . . not without risking the very survival of the Bodywalkers.

Review

First of all, the covers and titles for this series are delicious. (: Alright, onto the review. This was my first book by this quite well- known author. I have seen her name around and her paranormal books always intrigued me. So I jumped at the opportunity to try out her newest series. The verdict? O.O Why have I not picked up her other series? This woman is crazy creative. She blended ancient Egyptian souls with contemporary characters who are "hosts" to the souls and she made it work. I don't know how she made it work... but she did. It baffles the mind.

I really enjoyed Docia's character. She was a bit shy at times, but she said some of the darndest (Well, I thought it was a word. I am going to ignore the red squiggly line..) things that just made me like her. And the chemistry between her and Ram is off the charts! Ram was so hot. To me, it just felt a little weird that we think of her as Docia- the human and we think of him as Ram- the bodywalker. I mean.. he is in Vincent's body. It freaked me out a little thinking of the souls becoming the dominant hosts and essentially taking over the human's lives. It would be horrible to get a backseat to your own life and body. ): Think about it. But I pushed on past that *shivers* and I was able to genuinely enjoy the book. I guess, if you really thought about it, there were essentially four main characters- two in each body. You will just have to read it and see if you can accept it like I did. It didn't hurt that I adore Egyptian anything. There is just something special and unique about the Egyptian people, so I found myself loving the little "history" explanation about the body-walkers. Docia's brother actually has a pretty large role in the book as well. He was cool. I loved his and Docia's interactions in the first few pages of the book. Typical brother and sister quarreling. <3

All in all? The romance was HOT. The characters progression and growth throughout the book was entertaining. Some of the explanations were a little bit long- winded and the whole body- snatchers thing was kind of weird at first, but a great book that I would recommend to lovers of paranormal romance and ancient Egypt. Ooh- ooh, and I totally approve of the ending. *thumbs up*

Forever

  Goodreads | Nightwalkers #2
After being brought back from death, police officer Jackson Waverly receives the shock of his life: he has become host to a Bodywalker, a spirit that is reborn in flesh and blood, and part of a proud, ancient race that uses its extraordinary gifts to battle dark, evil forces. Jackson’s spirit is a powerful one—none other than the Egyptian pharaoh Menes, who longs to reunite with his eternal love, the Egyptian queen Hatshepsut.

While Menes is obsessed with finding the perfect vessel for his queen, Jackson cannot stop thinking about Dr. Marissa Anderson, the gorgeous precinct shrink who keeps pushing him to confront his grief over the loss of his K-9 partner. But what Marissa really arouses most in Jackson is intense desire, which is exactly what Menes is looking for. To fight a great enemy, pharaoh and queen must join; but to host Hatshepsut, Marissa will first have to die. Fate has given Jackson a profound choice: save Marissa from Menes’ plan or keep an entire species from the brink of extinction.

Review
Ah, the brother. We meet again. We are introduced to Jackson in Forbidden, so I was a little bit used to him by the time this book rolled around. Not much, but enough to be really excited that he merged with FREAKING MENES. O.O Whaaaat?! The pharoah king from the first book who is deeply in love with his queen? Well, by now you have rad the description of this book above, so it is no great secret that the poor pharoah is still trying to reunite with his queenie in body form if you get my drift.. no? okay. Anyway! I love Jackson and Marissa's little awkward "I think I like you, but I work with you, but OMG why are you acting different and YOU WANT ME TO WHAT?" Okay, that was all over the place.  But yeah, it is interesting to see Marissa deal with the whole "Oh, hey, we should make her the vessel!" campaign. She is a really strong character and I really enjoyed watching her and Jackson stumble through everything with the pharoah "looking" over Jackson's shoulder. Haha. Talk about pressuring someone into a relationship.

A very entertaining and HOT read. I mean, whew they pick the dreamiest bodies to merge with. *wiggles eyebrows*
I loved the pharoah's determination to get back together with his lady- love. Poor queenie. Nobody wants her. lol. Sorry, that was insensitive. Also, an unexpected ending with characters that grow on you as they grow on each other.. or.. in each other? Still wireds me out a little, but it is SO COOL! ON TO LEO! THE MERCENARY! :D *swoons*

Also, I kind of think that anyone within this small circle of friends need to stop getting themselves killed. Just saying. (:

OOH- OOH! I almost forgot about the villains! :D They are awesome and freaky. Nuff said.

Forsaken
Nightwalkers #3 | Goodreads
As a mercenary, Leo Alvarez has signed on for a lot—but he never signed on for his best friend becoming host to the soul of an ancient Egyptian pharaoh. Jackson is now inhabited by a Bodywalker, and Leo is forced to grapple with a realm of supernatural beings far more dangerous than anything he’s ever encountered.

But when Jackson is wounded by an attack from a demon god, Leo must team up with another supernatural creature—a Night Angel—to save his friend from utter destruction. With skin as black as midnight, hair as white as snow, and a body of pure perfection, the Night Angel arouses a burning desire in Leo, even as he refuses to be intimidated by her power—or the power of those who would destroy his friend. An unusual alliance is forged, electrified by sexual temptation, and together the two must unite their strengths to bring down a supreme evil.

Review
Aaaaaaah. You read the description, right? This book goes off in a different direction than the previous books. I missed the Egypt craziness, but at the same time, I was super excited to get away from the body- snatching for a while! Faith is so unique. I mean.. a Night Angel with white hair and black skin? Can you picture that for me? Weird but AWESOME! She was beautiful in my mind and Leo was pretty cool, too. The romance was hot and steamy! I love how all the characters from the other two books are still big parts of the series. I didn't mention this before, but there are more paranormal beings in this series than just the nightwalkers, or even Night Angels. haha. I can't get over it. Night Angel. SO COOL. Anyway, moving on.

I loved Leo and his animosity towards the bodywalkers in his friends' bodies. It is a completely plausible feeling to have. I mean, I was sort of defensive of the poor humans, too. I mean, I got over it. ;) But I can totally understand where he is coming from and I appreciate a character who has doubts and is not all gung-ho for his best friend being body- snatched and changing/blending. Especially when those changes put him in great danger. I love that she thought it out, and created that realistic character. Kudos.

Faith is a dynamic character as well, dealing with her own confusing feelings about Leo. (: I thoroughly enjoyed her character. hehe.

The villains are still at it and oh so good at being bad.

So, I loved the ideas of the individual characters. A distrusting mercenary and a freaking Night Angel united to bring down evil. O.O How can that not be an entertaining story that will keep you flipping pages. The romance was steamy and the characters were gorgeous.

I like how the parts that will be integral in the next books are introduced in the end of the previous ones. Although, I will be dying waiting for the fourth book to come out. O.O I am super excited for that one.

[Review] Playing with Fire by Cassandra Bella

Goodreads | Published Nov 2013
At the tender age of eighteen, Jessie Bacelli learned the truth of evil. After the murder of her father, Jessie steps in to take care of her younger sister, Annie, while following in her father’s footsteps and becoming an agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Dedicating her career to bringing down Luther Rabago, the man responsible for her father’s death, she doesn’t have time for distractions in her life. Especially when they are as handsomely annoying as fellow agent, Alec Chambers.

But then Jessie is faced with the worst horror of her life. Luther Rabago has taken her sister, Annie, and initiates a dark game of cat and mouse that stretches from the streets of Downtown Denver to the heart of the French Quarter in New Orleans. Partnered with Alec, Jessie finds herself battling not only her fear for her little sister, but her attraction to a man that is everything she swore long ago she would never allow in her life. And as the flames ignite around them, Jessie realizes she very well might lose more than she ever imagined.

Review
This book is a mixture of Suspense and contemporary with strong elements of romance. The book is told in third person points of view, alternating the focus  on several different characters. The novel focused predominately on Jessie and Alec with small sections focusing on Annie, Rabago (villain), Brett (father's partner), and even the father in the first chapter. I thought this book worked nice in 3rd person, since there was still that focus on Alec and Jessie and their emotions. I did not feel as connected to them as if the novel had been told in 1st person, but as a suspense novel, sometimes it is better being able to view the story from the outside while the detectives are chasing leads and introducing more info to the case. It makes the story a bit more fast- paced than if it were in 1st person. That being said, the book was not particularly fast paced, which made sense since detectives do not solve cases and find missing person's in one day as they do on crime shows. That made that aspect a little more believable.

I like that we come into the book with the two main characters having a small working knowledge of each other- even if their prospective opinions are not the most flattering. We delved into Jessie and got to know the inner workings of her heart and what made her tick- after all, this is her story. We sort of get a smaller crash course on Alec whose life was basically pleasant in comparison. He is a woman- lover and he unintentionally aggravates Jessie due to her unwanted attraction to him. She just has a problem with relationships in general and has the lowest opinion of him. He has always just known her as the hot, hard- as steel- FBI agent who spent her career slowly taking down Rabago's empire piece by piece. But then Rabago finally gets tired of her messing with his plans, he decides to make her life hell. He kidnaps her sister, setting off a cat and mouse game where he is always two steps ahead of Jessie. With Jessie forced to partner up with the man who gets under he skin and eager to hunt the man who took her only family, her life starts falling apart around her. Due to the new intimacy of partnership and the race against time to find Annie, the two are forced to spend more time with each other and deal with whatever the hell it is simmering between them. Jessie can't afford the distraction, but at the same time craves it.

While parts of each other's lives are opened up to each other and they learn more about the other, the reader follows along and builds a deeper understanding of the characters and what drives them as the characters figure it out themselves. Although Jessie is a much more defined character who we know every aspect about, Alec was a great character in his own right and I enjoyed watching his feelings for Jessie change throughout the book.

I do feel like I wanted a bit more of the novel focused on Annie, but I guess I can be content with the little I did get.

Rabago was a bit of a sporadic villain and I don't understand why he waited years to retaliate against Jesse when she has been a thorn in his side since she graduated the police academy. I swear to you, at one point the guy was sitting in a chair, plotting her destruction while stroking a cat. I kid you not. I had to laugh at the villain stroking the cat cliche. I don't think it was meant for comic relief, since the book has a serious note, but I don't care. As crazy as he sounded in the book and as master-mind- like as he was throughout the novel, you would think he wouldn't have made the stupid mistakes he made in the end. I can't stand villains who talk and talk giving the victim time to retaliate. If you are going to be evil, damn it, be evil. lol. I know, that is messed up, but come on. Did scar hesitate before he threw Mufasa into the stampede of wildebeest? NO. He did not. That is all.

Aside from the wayward villain (I don't really understand what he did. Was he a drug lord... I.. don't get it. A Don? Some kind of Crime mogul. All I got was that he has henchmen and he is rich and he is the bad guy and that he strokes cats.. moving on. Maybe I just missed that sentence. Dang it, Snyder, pay better attention next time!) and the fact that the book held my attention for short periods of time, but did not keep me glued to it or engrossed in the story too much like some romantic suspense I have read, it was a pretty good read with a well- defined lead character.

I'm torn between a 3.5 and a 3.7
[3.5 being the average rating I am prone to giving a book I liked]

While the book was good, It is not one that will stick in my mind. I would recommend to suspense readers though.

Oh! Also, I must mention the title and cover are gorgeous and adequately fit the story-line and characters. (:

THE SCOURGE
(Brilliant Darkness, Book 1)
Seventeen-year-old Groundling, Fennel, is Sightless. She's never been able to see her lush forest home, but she knows its secrets. She knows how the shadows shift when she passes under a canopy of trees. She knows how to hide in the cool, damp caves when the Scourge comes. She knows how devious and arrogant the Groundlings' tree-dwelling neighbors, the Lofties, can be. And she's always known this day would come--the day she faces the Scourge alone. The Sightless, like Fenn, are mysteriously protected from the Scourge, the gruesome creatures roaming the forests, reeking of festering flesh and consuming anything--and anyone--living. A Sightless Groundling must brave the Scourge and bring fresh water to the people of the forest. Today, that task becomes Fenn's. Fenn will have a Lofty Keeper, Peree, as her companion. Everyone knows the Lofties wouldn't hesitate to shoot an arrow through the back of an unsuspecting Groundling like Fenn, but Peree seems different. A boy with warm, rough hands who smells like summer, he is surprisingly kind and thoughtful. Although Fenn knows his people are treacherous, she finds herself wanting to trust him. As their forest community teeters on the brink of war, Fenn and Peree must learn to work together to survive the Scourge and ensure their people's survival. But when Fenn uncovers a secret that shatters her truths, she's forced to decide who and what to protect--her people, her growing love for Peree, or the elusive dream of lasting peace in the forest. Excerpt from the THE SCOURGE "Are you ready, Fennel?” Aloe asks. I nod. She embraces me, and whispers in my ear. “Don’t forget—never forget—you are protected. The Scourge can’t harm you. Remember that when you’re afraid.” “I’m afraid now.” “Then remember it now.” She leads me to the passage that will take me back to the mouth of the cave. People touch me as I walk, murmuring good luck. Eland clings to me, followed by Calli. Her tears moisten my cheek. “Here, Fennel.” Bear’s voice is even rougher than usual. He presses something silky into my hand, his fingers lingering on mine. “The foot of a rabbit, for luck.” It’s a charm, left over from the old days, before the Fall. Then his hand is gone, and everyone is gone, and I stand alone in the passageway. I start walking, rehearsing in my mind what I’ll do when I leave the caves, as Aloe taught me. Take the path to the clearing. Walk along the edge of the clearing. Find the sled track, and follow it down to the water hole, where the sled waits. I go over the number of paces it should take to complete each part of my trip, repeating them to be sure I remember. Then I try to wipe my mind clean. I try not to think of the cries of the creatures the night before. I try not to think of the many stories I’ve heard about the flesh-eaters tearing apart their victims, or the agonizing transformation into one of them—half human, half dead. Instead I focus on the cool, lumpy rock under my hand, or the musty smell of the passage, or how many steps I have left until I reach the mouth of the cave. Anything else. But it’s impossible. My heart is a desperate animal, smashing against my rib cage. My shivering now has nothing to do with the cold. I sing—another trick Aloe taught me—but the closer I get to the mouth of the cave, the slower I walk and the softer I sing. Then I stop walking and singing altogether, trying to work up the courage to take the last few steps necessary to reach the sunlight. Something’s thrashing through the forest, coming closer. I hear shrieking, like the dying people of my imagination. I tuck the rabbit’s foot into my pocket, and tug a scarf Aloe gave me up over my mouth and nose, preparing for the stench. For a moment I wonder if my protection will hold, but I push the thought away. It’s the gift of our Sightlessness, as I’ve always been told. I think of Eland huddled in the gloom of the caves, eating the salty dried meat, waiting for his water ration. That does it. I take a deep breath, and step outside. The creatures surge around me. Their howls pierce me. Even through the barrier of the scarf, I can smell their putrid breath. Something brushes my sleeve and I cry out, wrapping my arms tightly around my body like a shroud. What if I’m not protected? What if everything I’ve been told about my Sightlessness—everything I’ve believed about myself—isn’t true? The Scourge will consume me, as they have so many others. Or worse, I’ll become like one of them, only knowing hunger, thirst, and the yearning for flesh. I yank the scarf down; it’s suffocating. I wait, shuddering, for biting mouths and tearing hands to find me.

 THE DEFIANCE
(Brilliant Darkness, Book 2)
It hasn't been long since Fennel, a Sightless Groundling, and Peree, her Lofty Keeper, fell in love and learned the truth: the Scourge, and their world, are not what they seem. Fenn and Peree are determined to guide their people to the protected village of Koolkuna, but first they must convince them that everything they believe is a lie. An impossible task, especially when someone seems hell-bent on trying anything--even animal sacrifice and arson--to destroy the couple's new bond and crush the frail truce between the Groundlings and the Lofties. Not everyone wants to uproot their lives in the forest, and those who stay behind will be left terribly vulnerable. Fenn and Peree's resolve to be together, and the constant threat of the Scourge's return, push both groups to the breaking point. Unable to tell friend from foe, Fenn must again decide how much she's willing to sacrifice to ensure the future of the people of the forest. Only this time, the price of peace may be too high to bear.

Praise for The Defiance "Fans of The Scourge, you will not be disappointed with this sequel. The Defiance was thrilling, romantic, and full of surprises. Loved this book!" -- Imagine a World, blog review "I had very high hopes for this follow-up novel, and Henley DEFINITELY delivers in her sophomore release!" -- Booking It With Hayley G, blog review

Excerpt from THE DEFIANCE The morning passes quickly. There was more wood to move into the storeroom in the caves this morning, new stores of salt meat and dried beans to deliver, and our herbalist, Marjoram, told me she has some poultices and teas she wants me to bring in. Marj was underprepared for the accidents and illnesses resulting from such a long confinement last time. She won’t make the same mistake again. There’s plenty of space in the storeroom—it was almost empty by the time we left the caves after the Reckoning. It’s an easy job to stow the supplies neatly along the natural stone shelves. My stomach rumbles, anticipating a midday meal, as I cross the cavern to the storeroom carrying the second-to-last load of wood. Even the lingering stench of crampberries doesn’t deter my appetite. “Fennel.” The word whispers across the cave. I freeze. “Who’s there?” “Stay away from the Lofty. Groundlings and Lofties aren’t meant to be together. You’ve been warned.” I can’t tell anything about the speaker—man, woman, their age. But quiet as the person’s words are, it’s hard to miss the implied threat. I drop most of the wood, keeping one thick log as a potential weapon. The person is between the passage out and me. I hold the log firmly in front of me, trying to tame my wild breathing so I can hear. Fear strangles my thoughts. An indefinable amount of time passes. Finally wrestling the courage to move, I step forward, keeping the log at the ready. And I cough. The air is wrong, and not simply human-waste wrong. Something else. There’s light where there shouldn’t be, and . . . smoke. That’s what I’m tasting and smelling. There’s a fire in the passageway, and it’s blocking my way out. Terror doesn’t steal through me. It rips my head off.
